Solar Panels and Heat Pumps: Do They Work Together?

Heat pumps and solar panels are often sold as a natural pair, and they can be, but the fit is less automatic than it sounds because of when each one is doing most of its work.

The timing problem

Solar panels generate most of their output in spring and summer, in the middle of the day. Heat pumps work hardest in autumn and winter, and often run more in the early morning and evening to bring a home up to temperature. That mismatch means a lot of the electricity your heat pump uses in the months it matters most simply isn’t being generated by your panels at the same time.

Where the overlap does help

  • Hot water heating in summer. If your heat pump also handles hot water, running that cycle during the day lets it draw directly from solar generation rather than the grid.
  • Homes with a battery. Storing summer surplus generation and, more relevantly, being on a cheap overnight tariff to run the heat pump in winter, does more for running costs than solar generation alone.
  • Shoulder seasons. In spring and autumn, when both systems are active, a well-sized heat pump running during daylight hours can use a meaningful share of solar output.

What actually cuts your heating bill

For most homes, the bigger lever on heat pump running costs is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant and the running-cost gap versus gas, not solar. A heat pump is typically 30 to 70% cheaper to run than a gas boiler on its own, before solar is even part of the equation.

Should you install both together?

If you’re already getting quotes for one, it’s worth pricing the other, since sharing scaffolding, an installer visit and potentially a shared battery can reduce combined installation costs versus doing them separately.
